Get ready, a cooking revolution is at the kitchen door. What the cell phone did for the telecommunication industry, induction cooking is now doing for the food industry. While the technology has been around for decades, in recent years it has been greatly improved upon, already taking hold in Europe and Japan. There can be no doubt that magnetic induction promises to be the most attractive cooking option on the market. In this article we will discuss how induction cooking works, how it differs from electric and gas stovetops, and explain the advantages and disadvantages of the new technology.

Up until now, there have been two basic methods of cooking food. Both methods follow the same basic principles. In the chemical method, a combustible material-such as wood, coal, or gas-is burned to generate heat; while the electrical method accomplishes the same thing by running a current through a coil, or more recently, a halogen-filled bulb. (A third, oven-only option for generating heat needed for cooking is microwaving, which generates the heat within the food itself.) Magnetic induction is a completely different technology.

A crash course in basic physics explains how it works. When a conductor is placed in the presence of a changing magnetic field, electricity is produced in the conductor. The result is an electromagnet. In induction cooking, an electromagnet is placed under the cooking surface. When turned on, an alternating current runs through the electromagnet, producing a magnetic field. A large metal object on the surface will pick up the current and generate heat. Voila! Now we’re cooking!

The biggest difference between induction cooking and its counterparts is where the heat is generated. Gas and electric stovetops produce heat on a burner. The heat is then transferred, more or less efficiently, to a cooking vessel and its contents. In contrast, induction cook tops generate heat in the vessel itself, while the burner stays cool. Since there is no transfer of heat from burner to pan, there is virtually no wasted heat. Studies have shown that induction cooking may be up to 90% energy efficient, compared to electric and gas cooking, which are 47% and 40% energy efficient respectively. In addition to efficiency, induction cooking is the superior choice when it comes to safety issues. Because the cooking surface stays cool (i.e. room temperature) there are no more burned hands or hot pads and there is no open flame sending potentially dangerous fumes into the air. Best of all, with the heat focused in the right place, the kitchen–and the chef–stays cool and comfortable.

But the real luxury of induction cooking-the things that sets it apart as the Porsche of cook tops-is the precision and control it gives the chef. By varying the strength of the magnetic field, the heat generated in the pot responds instantly. This means water boils in half the amount of time it takes electric and gas stoves. Low temperatures work as well as high ones-meaning you can toss out your double boiler! One experiment showed chocolate chips melting at such a low temperature they held their shape until spread with a spoon. Induction warmers are great for caterers as well, since they hold low temperatures and keep food warm better than any of the alternatives.

Unfortunately there are a couple big disadvantages to induction stoves. For the pan to conduct energy it must be magnetic-that is, it must contain iron. Therefore, cast-iron and steel pots and pans are necessary. Test your cookware by passing a magnet across the pan. If the magnet sticks, the pan will work. Some cookware, made with layers of aluminum and copper for distribution, will still work beautifully on an induction cook top, as long as the surface of the pan is steel.

The second disadvantage is unavailability. For some reason, induction cooking has been slower to take off in America than it has across the Atlantic. Therefore, it’s still hard to find, and models are more expensive. (Prices start well above a thousand dollars.) However, as the market increases, look for prices to steadily fall. If you can’t wait, there are several websites where you can order an induction cook top and have it delivered to your home. Installation is relatively easy.

After using an induction cook top, it’s easy to imagine the day when we will look back on electric or gas ranges with the same astonishment and nostalgia as we do grandma’s old wood stove.

Warm weather is here, and that means most of us will be wearing nail polish more often to show off our hands and feet. The barer summer clothes and sandals mean your feet and hands will be center stage, so putting a few extra minutes into proper nail care is must for the prettiest looks. Whether you are applying nail polish to your hands or toes, the basic principles to make your manicure or pedicure last are the same.

1. Prepare your nails properly before polishing. Nail polish won’t adhere well to nails that are dirty or oily. Wash your hands thoroughly to remove any lotions, dirt or oils, and then brush each nail with a bit of nail polish remover. This will remove all oils from the nail itself and prepare it for accepting polish.

2. Lightly buff your nails and file off any rough edges. Polish will be more prone to peeling and flaking if the nails are rough around the edges or have ridges in them. Filing and buffing gives a smoother surface so that polish won’t flake.

3. Choose the right polish. Did you know that nail polish expires? Most brands will only last about a year before they become thicker and start to clump. Polish that’s too thick will go on thicker and won’t dry well, leading to more chance of smearing or smudging. Most nail polish formulas are similar and will last almost a week, but fast drying formulas are an exception. The extra ingredients that allow fast drying polishes to set so quickly also makes them peel more quickly, so try to avoid fast-dry formulas unless you absolutely have to use them. The extra few minutes spent drying a standard nail polish will be well worth it if your manicure lasts days longer.

4. Care for your polish properly. Summer weather is especially tough on nail polish - the high temperatures can cause polish to separate and the color to change. To keep your nail polish in top condition, refrigerate it in the summer. You should also clean the polish bottle carefully after each use by wiping the outside edge of the bottle with a cotton ball soaked in nail polish remover to keep the bottle from sticking shut. Finally, be sure that you gently blend the nail polish before applying by rolling the bottle between your hands. Shaking a bottle of polish will create air bubbles in the polish that can cause bumps and clumps when you apply it - guaranteed to shorten the life span of your manicure or pedicure.

5. Use a base coat and top coat. It takes a bit more time to do a complete manicure rather than just throwing on some polish, but its well worth the effort. After your nails are clean, be sure to apply a base coat; this product prepares the nail for polish and gives nail polish something to cling to so that it lasts longer. Follow this with two thin coats of polish in the desired color, and then finish off with a quality top coat. When you apply the top coat, be sure to run the brush horizontally across the tip of the nail with a bit of it going under the edge of the nail. This will help prevent peeling and seals the manicure properly.

6. Don’t rush things. Be sure to let your nails dry five to ten minutes between each coat. If the coat below isn’t completely dry before you add the next one, your nails won’t dry properly for quite a while, leading to chips and smudges. If you are in a rush or simply impatient, plunge your nails into ice water for a few seconds between coats - this will quickly dry and seal the polish.

People have owned dogs as pets for thousands of years. Ever since then dogs have had a behavior problem. You know what I’m talking about; dogs do many things that we do not want them to do such as, barking in the middle of the night, peeing on the carpet, digging holes in the ground, and even biting your guests. Now, many people have tried to figure out ways to teach dogs how to act. But lately there have been many books written on how to solve your dog’s behavior problem. These books have a price but in my opinion they are worth it. It is such a blessing to have your dog act the way you want him to and even have him perform a few tricks to impress your friends. Dogs are like people in some ways: they like to be loved, they want to feel needed, and they like to play.

Adding a border color to the outside perimeter of a room can really add a touch of class. Experienced carpet installers are generally familiar with the steps involved. It’s fairly straight forward. You may be new to rug fabrication, if so, then here are two quick and concise step by step techniques that are guaranteed to get the job done.

In this case we’ll imagine that you are installing new carpet in a 12′ x 12′ room, you are also going to add a complimentary 12″ border around the perimeter.

Beginners technique - keep reading for a more advanced technique.

Step 1. Precut your borders, 4 @ 12‘ x 12″ in., prep and clean floor. Install tackless strips and padding.

Step 2. Drop your carpet, install & powerstretch.

Step 3. Measure from the wall 12″ - cut through & mark on each end of the carpet. Mark the backside.

Step 4. Flip back the carpet, just enough to cut the 12″ strip & remove with your straight edge.

Step 5. Repeat on wall #2.

Step 6. Put your borders in place on walls 1 & 2.

Step 7. Using a seaming iron, seam borders to the main carpet, wait a few minutes.

Step 8. Use a kneekicker to re-install the carpet on walls 1 & 2.

Step 9. Repeat these steps for walls 3 & 4.

While there is some wasted carpet involved with this technique, it’s still the easiest & fool proof way to get the job done.

Advanced Technique-

Step 1. Precut your borders, 4 @ 13” x 12′, prep and clean floor. Install tackless strips and padding

Step 2. Cut field carpet to size - 10′ x 10′. Place field piece into center of room.

Step 4. Layout your borders and seam to the field piece with a seaming iron, wait a few minutes before installing.

Step 5. Install with a power-stretcher. Be careful, gently stretch the carpet until you have 1″ excess to trim.

This approach requires more precision during the installation. The benefits are that you have no wasted carpet. The overall Install can be faster as well.

Quick Tips-

Tip #1-

Some rooms may have several ‘jogs’ or ‘legs’ that interfere with your nice straight borders. For example: a doorway, or sliding door, or connection to another room can force your border ‘out or in’ a couple of inches or more. Make it easy on yourself. Don’t bother making adjustments that small. Imagine the field piece within the room to be as straight as possible. Your borders will then vary slightly in widths as they absorb the ‘jogs’. It looks better too!

Tip #2 -

Pre-fabricate and bevel multiple borders before installing. It’s always easier to produce these custom rugs in your workshop prior to going ‘on-site’. Do as much pre-fabricating as possible. If you are comfortable pre-fabricating the whole project and the rooms are not too large, then doing so can save you time and increase your profits. Go for it.
