Personal Safety And You

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

Personal safety is of the utmost importance these days. But all the police and firemen and EMS workers in the world can’t be there to protect you 24/7. So taking charge of your own personal safety is the first step to keeping yourself out of danger. The Home Security store offers a number of devices that help increase your personal safety, but simple common sense behavior is the best place to start.

Personal Safety on the Street

?Sling your purse across your body and hold it to your chest so it cannot be snatched.
?If you can’t do that, be prepared to let go of your purse immediately if someone grabs it, lest you be pulled to the ground and hurt.
?If someone tries to attack you, shout in a very loud voice “No!” and then give an order to people nearby so they do not misinterpret your situation. Make it clear you are in danger by shouting “Call 911!”
?Follow your intuition. If someone is making you nervous, do whatever you can to avoid them.

?If someone is following you, go to the nearest store or other populated place.
?If someone is following you, do not go home, or you’ll let the criminal know where you live.
?Don’t label your keys with your name or address.
?Do not talk loudly about social or vacation plans because someone could overhear you and know when you’ll be away from home.

?Always be alert and aware of your surroundings.
?Carry a personal safety alarm.
?Carry mace or pepper spray to defend yourself against attackers.

Personal Safety at Home

?Keep lights on all doorways.
?Use a home safety alarm system to secure your home against intruders.
?Install motion sensor lights outside your home.
?Keep all doors and windows locked even when you are at home.

?Approach your home with your keys out and ready so you get inside quickly.
?Keys can be used for your defense as well.
?Make sure no one follows you into the garage.
?Close the garage door immediately after pulling inside.

?Keep the door from your garage to your home locked at all times. It is just like any other entryway.
?Never answer the door to an unexpected visitor. Call to them through the doorway to ask for identification.
?Get identification from all cable men or plumbers who may come to your door. If they have none, call the company to confirm their identity.

?Never let a stranger in to make a phone call. Offer to make the call for them.
?Never hide a key under a doormat. Criminals know all the hiding places.

Personal Safety in the Car

?Always be aware of everyone around you in the parking lot.
?Approach your door with your keys out and ready.
?Check the backseat and under the car before getting inside.
?Do not park next to a van, if possible. You can be easily dragged into the side of a van and kidnapped.

?Start your car as soon as you get inside.
?Keep your windows rolled up and doors locked.
?If you are stopped at a stoplight or sign and feel there is a real threat from someone approaching your car, run the light. It is better to get a ticket than to be the victim of a crime.
?Park in well-lit areas.

?If someone tries to get you to pull over, for any reason, do not do so until you are at a populated, well-lit gas station or police station.
?Do not pick up hitchhikers.

Personal Safety and Dogs

?Your first instinct will be to run away. Don’t. The dog’s chase instinct will kick in, and you know how dogs love to chase things.
?Remain calm and still.
?Let the dog sniff you.
?Do not look directly in the dogs eyes as that is a form of doggie aggression.

?In a calm but firm voice say “No! Go away!”
?If the dog lunges at you, block yourself with your purse, briefcase, or coat in order to distract the dog to give you a chance to break free and escape.
?Back away slowly.

Personal safety is about being alert and having a plan. If you know what to do and what not to do, you will be able to handle emergencies that threaten your personal safety. If nothing else, just follow your instincts when it comes to personal safety. If your gut is telling you something is wrong, you personal safety could be in danger. Listen to your gut. Be smart and be safe.

Did You Know?

? German Shepherds were among the first dogs trained for police work- beginning around 1900 in Ghent, Belgium.

? Dog’s body cells contain the most pairs of chromosomes (heredity- carrying structures) of any mammal- 39 pairs.

? There is an old Chinese belief that if a person owns a good and faithful dog that the dog will sacrifice itself to Death when Death demands a member of its’ immediate family.

? The most decorated U.S. dog during World War II was a German Shepherd/Husky/ Collie mix named Chips. He also served as a guard dog in North America and later earned a Silver Star for capturing a machine gun nest during the invasion of Sicily.

? Dogs have been used to determine whether twins are identical or fraternal because identicals have the same scent, but fraternals do not, no matter how much they may look alike.

? The Latin word for faithful is “Fido?” Could this possibly have any connection with the fact that so many dogs are named this?

? If an old or sick dog does not shake itself after getting up that this is a sign of bad overall health? Each dog shakes itself to get every muscle and tendon back into perfect place after waking up.

? A dog can survey an area between 200 to 270 degrees, depending on the shape of its skull and the positioning of its eyes, compared to the average of 100 degrees for a human being.

? Due to the popularity of lap dogs in ancient Rome, Julius Caesar once mused if Roman women had ceased to have children in lieu of their new four-legged companions.

eBay: Can You Really Make Money Here?

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008

As a mother of two, Sarah was always busy. But, this did not stop her from finding her niche in the world. She had been designing beautiful jewelry for her friends for years. She gave them as gifts. She presented them to others who wished to buy them to give to their friends. She made each piece by hand and loved every minute of it. She knew, though, if she wanted to make any real money on this little business that she got going that she needed to find individuals that would pay for them. Her circle of friends was wearing them, of course, but she knew if they loved them so much that others would too.

Sarah took her search online and found eBay. This online auction house allowed her to easily place pictures of her products on their site and soon enough people were bidding on them. She was selling her own products. Later, she would open an eBay store that would promote more than just one product for her. She soon found herself spending more time at the post office than ever delivering her jewelry to her newfound audience.

eBay is by far one of the most sought after internet businesses to dip your hands into. But, if you don’t have a lot of ‘junk’ lying around your home, you may find it hard to understand how you’ll make any money in this business. Don’t want to spend your days at garage sales and picking up other people’s trash so that you have something to sell? Here are some numbers that will make you think twice about these things.

a. eBay has more than 1.2 million registered users. That is your customer based presented to you.

b. Of those, about 25,000 of them are making five figure incomes from their eBay businesses.

c. Not looking for full time? Consider part time eBayers can supplement their income by several thousand dollars a year.

If you aren’t like Sarah and can’t make a product to sell, as many of us wish we could, you’ll find hundreds of other options too.

How Does eBay Work?

eBay is an online auction website. The website is designed to connect those that wish to sell products and those that want to find a great deal on products. The company is built on the fact that people want to get a better deal and love finding one. Just think about how you feel when you do go to that garage sale and find something that you want and can use in good shape for much less than what the retail stores sell it for. You know the shy smile that you get when you realize you are getting something for much less than what others have paid? You can think of eBay as a way to get those deals all the time.

From The Salesmanship Side

So, how do you sell and make an income on eBay? Most individuals start by cleaning house literally. They start by getting rid of things throughout their home that they simply do not need. When you can take stuff you don’t use and make a few dollars off of it, you’ll want to do it more. Cleaning just got profitable!

But, besides just selling things from around the home, those that are true eBay sellers realize that they need more to sell. Some will have their own products or services to offer. For example, some will sell crafts and such. Others will purchase products for next to nothing and sell them at a slight markup. This is where most eBayers make their money.

Wholesale Options Too

To find products to sell for low costs, many eBay sellers tap into the world of wholesale. Don’t worry, there are plenty of companies offering services online for wholesale prices if you by in quantity. Let’s say that you find out that XYZ Retailer has 10 refurbished MP3 players that you can purchase for $50 each. The new cost would be well over $100. Now, you can list them on eBay and make a solid profit on these, right?

Don’t Make Less Than It’s Worth

One problem that many mistakenly run into is not getting their money’s worth out of the products. But, eBay has protection here too. If you don’t want to lose any money on your MP3 purchases, you simply use a reserve on your auction. This term means simply that until the reserve is met, the product will not be sold. So, if Jane Doe is the only bidder and only bids a mere penny, she won’t win the bid unless she raises her bid to meet your reserve or beyond.

Keys To Being A Successful Auctioneer

eBay is not the only company that you can auction with but with over 2.6 million users each day, it is definitely the one to go to in order to make that five figure income. Here are some tips to be successful.

a. Provide excellent, crisp and clear pictures. Make them as professional as possible by making them large enough to see detail. Offer several views. Along with the picture, provide an easy to read description. It needs to be detailed and can often be borrowed from the manufacturer’s website. List the quality of the product and be clear about the condition it is in.

b. Drive feedback up. One of the risks of eBay is that people are leery about providing their information to you. Will you deliver? The way to know if a seller is worth the risk is through their feedback rating. Keep yours high. Do this by delivering fast, answering questions quickly and clearly and being courteous. Also, make sure that you make your deliveries as safely as possible. Provide a guarantee of the product’s quality and deliverables.

So, can you make Sarah’s story your story? Do you have a hidden ability to make a product? Or, perhaps you are able to help friends get rid of their products too. In fact some individuals actually pay people for things that they know will sell well on eBay and make a killing on it! It could be a good thing to start a business just by selling what’s lying on your desk right now. Hmmm, what could you sell?

eBay may be the place for you to make a solid income. Consider taking a course to make sure you get all the tips and tricks out there.

Let’s Make Some Money With Google Adwords

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

Google adwords concept is easy. You create ads that Google shows alongside a keyword search. You give Google keywords that you want to be associated with your product. For example, you sell Disney T-shirts, you might want your ad to show up when people do a search for Disney. We’ve all seen these ads that appear to the right of a google search, called sponsored links. These are paid advertisements.

When you create an adwords ad you chose keywords for which your ad will appear and specify the maximum amount you’re willing to pay for each click. You only pay when someone clicks on your ad and visits your website.

Now that you know adwords is and excellent way to bring in revenue you need to determine how much you are willing to pay per click (PPC). You can figure this using the following simple formula: Divide your monthly visitors by your monthly sales, then convert that into a percentage by multiplying by 100. Say in a month you get 2000 visitors and sell 500 products each with a gross profit of $50.00. Your conversion ratio would be 2.5%. This means that 2.5% of every 100 people buy your product. Calculate your gross profit for every 100 visitors, 50 X 2.5%=$125.00. In this example you could afford to pay up to $1.25 for a visitor. This is a high amount and you would never have to pay that much.

Your keyword selection is the most important element when using adwords. These are the words when searched for will trigger the appearance of your ad in the search results. Choose these words while thinking what you would search for if you wanted a certain product. Use different spelling variations and plurals of your keywords to get the best results.

When creating your ad use good key words that are attention grabbing, such as free, new, tips and sale. Also explain the advantages of your product. Always have your exact keywords in the title. Use phrases like click here or visit this site to get your buyer to go to your website.

Keep a close eye on your budget, or you will get into trouble. When you have chosen your keywords and maximum cost per click, Google will suggest an amount for your daily budget. Adwords automatically tracks clicks, impressions and click through rates when your ad is up and running.

Adwords can be a fantastic source for new customers at a very low price. Research adwords and you will have a never ending flow of traffic to your website.

A Little Bit About The Pug

Sunday, March 9th, 2008

The Pug is known as the Carlin in France, Mopshond in the Netherlands, Mops in Germany and Chinese Pug or sometimes the Dutch Pug in Great Britain. So how did he come about with a name of the “Pug?” The name Pug may have come about from the shape of the dog’s head or the name refers to the dog’s resemblance to a marmoset or monkey.

The Pug was developed as a pet and entertainer. His clownish face and happy demeanor wins friends just about everywhere he goes. The little Pug is an ancient Oriental breed and was probably first developed in Tibetan monasteries prior to the first century A.D. He resembles the Pekingese and other Oriental breeds. The Pug was seen in Japan in early years as well. Some claim the Pug originated from Mastiff stock. This is not a proven fact and is doubted by many because several other toy breeds with large heads and curled tails came from the Orient. It is more probable that the Pug was carried from China by Holland’s trading ships and on into the Netherlands where he became the Clown Prince of many European courts in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

The Pug is said to be a wonderful companion. He fits in nicely with young families if the small kids are well informed about handling small dogs. The Pug makes a good companion to the elderly and is sufficiently active enough for young adult as well.

Pugs love to run and play. A backyard is usually enough space for their exercise. They enjoy leashed walks and make good hiking partners in cool weather or shady environments.

The Pug is affectionate, ready to please and sensitive. The Pug can provide hours of entertainment for its owner with many comical antics. He is sensitive to the moods of its owner. They are trustworthy, loyal and socialize easily with other pets. The Pug can exhibit a jealous streak if not given enough attention and may even pout. He is extremely trainable.

The Pug’s coat is short, lies flat, and requires regular brushing and combing to control shedding, which can be a lot. A rubber slicker brush is effective in removing loose hair and a grooming glove is often used.

The Pug’s coat is fine, smooth, soft, short and glossy. It is neither harsh nor woolly. The colors are usually fawn or black. They have a black mask, ears and facial wrinkles. The nails should be black.

The Pug is easy to maintain. It only needs regular brushing. The overnose wrinkle and ears should be checked daily and kept clean. If a sore develops, a vet should be consulted. Special attention should be given to the Pug’s eyes. The eyes should be kept clear and a vet consulted if not clear. The older Pug’s eyes are particularly vulnerable and occasionally require eye drops.

You will need a brush or a grooming glove, a selection of combs is useful. Brush the coat daily. Bathe in a suitable natural-ingredient shampoo and rinse well.

6 Dog Training Tips For A Well Trained, Well Behaved Pet

Saturday, March 8th, 2008

Dogs are considered man’s best friend. Throughout the ages and of all animals, dogs have been man’s companion. More than companions, dogs serve a variety of functions. There are working dogs (e.g., police dogs) and dogs that are used as guides for the disabled. Farmers and livestock owners use dogs for herding, and some home owners get dogs specifically to guard their property.

Whatever the primary purpose of a particular breed of dog is, it’s important that it receive proper training. Many dog training professionals will attest to the importance of having a well-trained dog. You don’t have to be a professional dog trainer to train your dog. You can do simple activities to teach your pet how to behave.

Dog training tip #1: Curbing your dog’s digging behavior

As a dog owner, you need to understand that dogs are social animals. When they are lonely or alone, dogs resort to digging. Loneliness isn’t the only reason dogs dig, though. In some instances, dogs that dig are experiencing some sort of nutrient deficiency. To make up for this condition, dogs oftentimes would eat the dirt they dig. If your dog tends to dig a lot, spend more time with him. It also pays to have your dog checked up to make sure that his health is in good condition.

Dog training tip #2: Potty training your dog

A reward-based method works best when potty training your dog. To use this method, give your dog a treat after it potties in the right place. Following up good behavior with a reward will make it easier for your dog to remember doing good behavior.

Dog training tip #3: Repetition is key

Whenever you are trying to teach your dog something — whether it’s a trick or making your dog obey a command — repetition is important. Repetition and consistency are keys that will help your dog understand a command. To test if your dog knows a command after so many repetitions, test him without any assistance. Do this at least three consecutive times to make sure that your dog’s grasp of a command is not simply a fluke.

Dog training tip #4: Communicating with your dog

When training your dog to follow a certain command or do a certain thing, it’s vital that you not just issue the command out. It’s also important that you direct your dog how to perform a command or drill as well as correct your dog if he doesn’t follow the command properly. Be consistent when you are issuing out commands and trying to teach your dog to develop certain behaviors. For instance, if you are trying to teach your dog not to chew on slippers or shoes, do not praise him one day when you see him chewing on a slipper.

Dog training tip #5: Proper timing in training your dog

It’s always best — and professional dog trainers will recommend this — to train your dog when it is still a puppy. When it comes to training dogs, it is indeed true that old dogs can’t learn new tricks. So start training your dog early.

Dog training tip #6: Let your dog know you’re the boss

Dogs are pack animals, which means they follow a hierarchy. Thus, when training your dog, it’s important that you establish yourself as the alpha dog (the leader). Your dog needs to understand that he is the submissive being. Avoid showing any fear when your dog snaps back. Doing so will break the established hierarchy you have with your dog. When your dog is doing his exercises, never allow your dog to stop mid-way or not complete the exercise. Firmly let your dog know that it should do what you, the alpha dog, wants him to do.

Dog training tip #6: Act around your dog

Your puppy will naturally want to chew on things so give your puppy an outlet for his chewing urges. You can give your puppy a chew bone to chew. If your puppy tries to chew on you, yelp loudly, fold your arms and ignore your puppy for about ten minutes. When a puppy becomes too rough on other puppies, the others yelp and tend to ignore the puppy. However, you may need to assess your puppy’s personality because he may react to the yelping by biting more and even harder. If this happens, you may need to apply a more aggressive approach.
