Candida Yeast Infection Is Very Common

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

Manufacturers of douches, deodorants, scented tampons, soaps and perfumes would have us believe the vagina is dirty. In order to sell their products they must make us believe women’s bodies are naturally unclean and have unpleasant odors. However, a healthy vagina has a pleasant, lightly musky odor and chemicals like these can mask changes in that odor which may signal an infection. These chemicals can also be harmful, by irritating the skin, mucous membrane, and Ph balance of the vagina. Unless it is used as a method for treating problems such as yeast overgrowth, douching is unnecessary and potentially harmful.

Although most vaginal infections in women are due to bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis, or yeast, there may be other causes as well. These causes may include allergic and irritative factors or other STDs. Noninfectious allergic symptoms can be caused by spermicides, vaginal hygiene products, detergents, and fabric softeners. Cervical inflammation from these products often is associated with abnormal vaginal discharge, but can be distinguished from true vaginal infections by appropriate diagnostic tests.

Candida albicans is a yeast-like fungus that normally lives in healthy balance in the body and is found mostly in the intestines, genital tract, mouth and throat. When the balance is upset, infection results. This is known as Candidiasis and the fungus travels to all parts of the body through the bloodstream. In the mouth, it is called thrush; in the vagina, it is called a yeast infection. Candidiasis affects both women and men but is rarely transmitted sexually. Women with diabetes have more yeast infections because their vaginal environment is more conducive to the yeast growth.

Immune suppression has been linked to the causes of the overgrowth of yeast. Some factors of change such as change in diet or nutritional habits can cause and imbalanc of yeast. Even the use of broad spectrum antibiotics, such as tetracycline or penicillin which can suppress and even kill beneficial bacteria that are vital to the genital tract, can allow the yeast to multiply and go unchecked. There are other underlying factors, such as Diabetes, that are believed to possilbly be the root cause of Yeast Infections.

Yeast infection may follow a course of antibiotics (particularly tetracycline) that were prescribed for another purpose. The antibiotics change the normal balance between organisms in the vagina by suppressing the growth of protective bacteria that normally have an antifungal effect.

Vaginal yeast infection can be passed back and forth between sexual partners as it can reside under the foreskin of the male. It is for this reason both partners should be treated in order to stop the problem.

In clinical settings, candidiasis if commonly treated with antimycoticsthe antifungal drugs commonly used to treat candidiasis are topical clotrimazole, topical nystatin, fluconazole, and topical ketoconazole. In severe infections (generally in hospitalized patients), amphotericin B, caspofungin, or voriconazole may be used. Local treatment may include vaginal suppositories or medicated douches. Gentian violet can be used for breastfeeding thrush, but pediatrician William Sears recommends using it sparingly, since in large quantities it can cause mouth and throat ulcerations in nursing babies, and has been linked to mouth cancer in humans and to cancer in the digestive tract of other animals.

American Obesity : Portions Gone Wild

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

I used to be one of those people who did not like to go to the higher end, gourmet or “healthy” restaurants. It wasn’t because I didn’t like the food, or that the atmosphere was not to my liking, it was because they served, in what had become my Americanized idea of meal size, “skimpy portions”.

However, the older I got, and the more educated I became on nutrition and healthy eating, I realized that these gourmet restaurants had it all right. Instead of focusing on quantity, they focused more on quality, and limited the portions on the plate to what was actually a healthy, moderate calorie count.

The American ideal of “the bigger the better” spilled over into our food consumption and portion rationing at meals not too long ago actually. After the great depression era, when Americans started to regain control over their finances, and foods and luxury items became more affordable, our portion sizes began to expand. Obesity still existed before this point, but since then it has spun out of control.

Obesity has also taken a turn for the worse because not only are the portion sizes getting bigger, but the foods we eat are higher in fat, sodium and sugars, a result of excessive processing and chemical additives, which build up in our system and cause obesity, diabetes, heart disease, mood disorders and countless other health issues which stem from excess weight.

In fact, chefs from some of the most popular American restaurants were recently surveyed, and reported that calorie count was the least of their concerns when they created signature dishes for the restaurants they worked for.

About one in six said that they even considered the calorie count aspect. They based their creations on flavor instead, casting aside portion size and fat content, etc., all of which add to the calorie count of a meal.

What can you do to avoid overeating if you frequent restaurants? Make sure you fill up on the salad, and get a low fat dressing, which can cut up to 100 calories from your meal many times. Unless you are going to a health food restaurant, or one that you know serves smaller, more controlled portions, you probably should not be finishing your meal. Take your time eating. Do not inhale your food.

Did you know that it takes your mind about 20 minutes to reigster that you are full? This is why many times you will feel just “satisfied” and pleasantly fulfilled when you finish a meal, and then about twenty minutes to a half hour later you feel ridiculously stuffed.

Ask for a box to take the rest home. This way, you will also not regret eating that big meal, and also will not be dealing with the effects of overeating, like sleepiness, mental fogginess, indigestion, gas pains, and cramping. It’s a win/win situation.

The increasing obesity epidemic has gotten so out of control that we now have gastric bypass surgery, which thousand of obese Americans elect to have each year, even though the surgery is extremely serious and many times life threatening. This is in direct response to a culture that grew up being under educated about portion control and wise food choices.

Many individuals in the baby boom era were not educated to the extent we are today about nutrition, how certain fats protect organs and well being, and others aid in their destruction, the effects of sugars on the body, and the effects of excess calorie consumption.

Most health professionals are hoping that the improved health and nutrition education available to the general public today will eventually whittle away at the obesity epidemic by making generation after generation more educated and armed with the knowledge they need to lead a healthy lifestyle.

So, what will happen in the future regarding health awareness and education? It’s been in the news lately that the government is actually stepping in as a proactive measure against further obesity and health issues. Government officials recently tried to ban trans fats from being used in restaurant cooking.

The NFL also has stepped in to band against childhood obesity by educating youths in schools about exercise and proper diet, and are also campaigning for reform in the public school’s physical education classes, since it was found that “gym class” typically involves less than 20 minutes of actual physical activity.

With all of these changes going on, and a growing awareness in the American public about nutrition, portion control, calorie consumption and healthy food choices, one can only be optimistic about the future health of America.

Can we eliminate obesity all together? Of course not, but if we can put a big dent in it, this will be hug victory in our collective health, longevity and prosperity.

The Inside Story Of Acne Cleansers - 1

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

Acne cleanser is used to prepare the skin before application of topical acne treatment- a cream, gel or a lotion. Ideally any acne cleanser should remove all the surface oils, dirt and any other impurity from the skin. Once the skin is clean the medication becomes more effective because there is no barrier between the medicine and the skin cells. Let us look at the common acne cleansers available and find out what you should be looking for.

Look for a gentle cleanser. It should be non-irritating and acid balanced. The cleanser should be non comedogenic and hypoallergenic. Let me explain these terms in detail.

Hypoallergenic-

Any product that does not cause allergy by use is called a hypoallergenic product. By reading the word hypoallergenic on any product, most people believe that it will not cause any allergy in them. But this may not be true. Manufacturers are not required to substantiate their claim that their product is hypoallergenic. The use of this term by a reputed company may mean that a product labeled as hypoallergenic has less chances of causing allergy in most of the consumers. You have to use a product and find out if it causes any allergy. Use products marked as hypoallergenic, etc., with caution because the results may be interpreted by a company in its favor to sell more products by luring consumers. Still a product marked hypoallergenic is better than a product that is not marked so.

Non comedogenic-

You might have observed that when you begin applying a particular product for some time, you begin getting comedones- whiteheads and blackheads. Any ingredient that can cause comedones is called comedogenic. Any product that does not cause comedones is called non-comedogenic.

To find out if any material is comedogenic, it is usually tested on the insides of a rabbit’s ear. After three weeks, the area of application is observed and a small biopsy is done. The numbers of comedones are counted and the material tested is labeled as comedogenic on a scale of 0 to 5. The material that causes no comedogenicity is labeled 0 and the highest comedogenic product is labeled as 5.

This test is carried out on individual materials, for example - mineral oil, or calendula or cetyl alcohol, etc. Every product that is to be used on the body can be tested in this manner and labeled. When you use a product for application on your body, you will find that most of the formulated products contain more than one ingredient. Such products are labeled as comedogenic, if any comedogenic ingredient is used in it. If a product is labeled as non-comedogenic, it is not supposed to contain any comedogenic material in it.

All of us are different and our body reacts differently to every material. Some of us may not have any comedones, even if we use a comedogenic product. Similarly, some of us may get comedones by using the safest of products. It is like asking - why I don’t get any acne, whereas my friend of same age cannot get rid of it? While using any product, read and note if it is labeled as non-comedogenic.

In the next part of this article we will find out more about the active ingredients that are formulated with acne cleansers.

What is the Aging Male Syndrome?

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

As men get older, they begin to notice all kinds of changes with their bodies. Many have gained a few extra pounds around their waist, they are fatigued, and their interest in sex takes a nosedive. In the past, all this was attributed to the natural aging process. However, recent studies have shown that every one of the above symptoms is an indicator of a clinical deficiency brought on by abnormal low levels of testosterone which is referred to as Aging Male Syndrome.

As men age, their testosterone levels do lower, this is a gradually process that takes several years. It does however result in male hypogonadism, which is called Andropause. Yes, this is male menopause. It is not a myth; it is a real health problem for many men over the age of 40.

Symptoms of Andropause include low energy, loss of sex drive, problems with memory, and depression. As Andropause progresses many men begin to have other health problems such as osteoporosis, ill health, dementia, heart problems, circulatory problems and falls. Circulatory problems can lead to or actually contribute to erectile dysfunction. If you look at women as they enter into menopause and what happens to their bodies with lower estrogen levels you should be able to comprehend that men with lower testosterone levels will have similar health problems.

It is believed that Aging Male Syndrome could be the missing or hidden link for men’s overall health. It could be the contributing factor for several serious health conditions such as osteoporosis, depression, heart disease, and diabetes. Yes, every man as they age will begin to have lower testosterone levels, but many do not realize the difference between a natural decline and low testosterone levels. The low levels that are apparent with Aging Male Syndrome are real medical concerns for men.

In the United States, research on the effects of aging in males is way behind where it should be. This could be from the male ego that does not allow them to consider the fact that Andropause is in fact a real problem. The male ego keeps them thinking that all their problems, health and psychological, are just part of the normal aging process. Other countries have stepped up the pace and realized that both men and women go through an aging process that can lead to health problems and have done something to bring attention to the Aging Male Syndrome and Andropause. In Europe, the European Menopause Society recently changed their name to The European Menopause & Andropause Society. In Canada, they have an organization for men exclusively known as the Canadian Andropause Society. There are other organizations found in Australia and the United Kingdom, however, no such organization or society exist in the United States even though around ten million men in America are affected.

More should be done to give information to men across the country that their symptoms such as erectile dysfunction, tiredness, depression, weakness, and loss of sex drive could be due to low testosterone and could be treated.

Iron Supplements For Breastfed Babies — Are They Necessary?

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

Many parents are led to to believe that routine iron supplementation is required for breastfed babies once they reach 6 months of age. Some studies, however, suggest that iron supplementation is unnecessary, unless signs of iron-deficiency anemia are present.

Iron plays an important role in the development of a baby’s brain and a lack of iron can significantly affect a baby’s ability to learn in later life. Iron is also required by the body to make hemoglobin, which supplies oxygen — through the blood — to the cells of the body . In addition, iron gives red blood cells their color, which is why a lack of iron is often suspected when someone appears particularly pale.

Babies are born with stores of iron, obtained from their mothers during pregnancy. For full term babies, these stores will usually last for at least the first 6 months of life. Some babies, however, are born with inadequate iron stores and have an increased risk of developing iron-deficiency anemia. These include

1. Premature babies. Babies obtain the majority of their iron stores from their mothers during the final months of pregnancy. This means that babies born prematurely may be more likely to have lower stores of iron at birth.

2. Low birthweight babies (generally below 6.5lb). This applies whether or not the pregnancy was full term.

3. Babies born to mothers with poorly controlled diabetes.

At some point, these babies may require iron supplementation, on medical advice.

However, it is the ROUTINE supplementation of full term, healthy, breastfed infants at 6 months that many experts are calling into question.

Whilst you may hear that the iron levels in breastmilk are low, a fact very often overlooked is that iron from breastmilk is extremely well absorbed, at a rate of 49 percent of the available iron. This is because breastmilk contains lactoferrin and transferrin, two specialized proteins that ensure efficient delivery of iron from the milk to your baby. These proteins also prevent the growth of “unfriendly” bacteria, such as E. Coli, by ensuring that no iron is made available to them.

In addition, breastmilk contains high levels of vitamin C and lactose, both of which assist with efficient iron absorption.

For these reasons, many experts now feel that an exclusively breast fed baby receives sufficient iron to keep his levels within the normal range BEYOND the first six months of life. It is, of course, a sensible precaution to have your baby’s iron levels tested, to ensure that no deficiency is present.

Once iron supplements, solid foods or mixed feeding (ie breastmilk plus iron-fortified formula) are introduced to a baby, the amount of iron available to him from breastmilk actually reduces. This is because the specialized breast milk proteins can become saturated by the extra iron he is receiving. They then become less efficient in their job of delivering iron to the baby.

Therefore, it is very important to make sure that, when your baby is eating solid foods on a regular basis, his diet contains plenty of iron rich foods.

These will compensate for the reduction in the amount of iron he is receiving from breastmilk. Good sources of iron include

meat
peas
dark green vegetables
beans
tofu
avocado
yam
barley
whole wheat cereal
broccoli
blackstrap molasses
amaranth
quinoa
millet

It is useful to serve foods containing vitamin C along with iron rich foods, as this combination aids iron absorption . Cooking in cast iron pans is also helpful, as the acids in some foods will “pull” the iron from the pan.

It is important to remember that a nursing mother cannot increase the iron levels in her breastmilk by increasing her own iron intake.

Noni - Tips For Optimal Health, Weight Loss, And Wellness

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

Mother says, “A Noni a day, will keep the doctor away.”

Hi, my name is John, and I want to let you know the truth about Noni - also known in the world of plants as morinda citrifolia. I am qualified to share Noni with you, not only because I am a youthful looking, handsome, and sexy guy, but also because I have a Noni plant growing in my back yard.

Yes, right here behind my house in the Philippines, and many of my neighbor’s yards have noni plants also. The black volcanic soil here is excellent for growing the noni plants. My wife went outside this afternoon and picked a small basket of fresh Noni fruit for me for later today. Lucky me!!!

When I drink the noni fruit juice, I like to mix it with a little pineapple juice and 7-Up to make the taste easier to swallow. The seeds are very spicy - like hot peppers — and burn my tongue when I suck on them to get loose the flesh of the fruit.

Was I surprised … The very first time I ate some of the fresh Noni fruit and drank the juice it had an immediate effect on my health. The very next day, I noticed that my back pains had vanished - gone away - and stayed away, as long as I consumed Noni fruit and juice every day. I have had lower back pains for over 40 years. Chiropractors helped, but the pain still did not go away.

Guess what - the cravings I had always had for snacks, junk foods, and sweets disappeared the very next day after taking Noni. I was definitely eating too much and gaining weight. After using Noni, my weight loss problems are gone.

I know - this is all only anecdotal evidence, and not based on any scientific study involving my use of Noni - but I am convinced of the benefits of using Noni. For me - it helps tremendously in making me feel better. It has cleared up a lot of medical and health problems that previously were dogging me.

This all started about 20 years ago. The noni fruit that I have eaten for many years has helped me feel healthier, look younger, lose weight, given me youthful skin, with fewer aches and pains of old age. You might call me a “health nut” because of all the health information I am constantly digesting about alternative medicine, vitamins, supplements, minerals, antioxidants, folk medicine, herbals, and so forth.

My body is over 60 years old, but most folks think I am in my late 40’s. My youthful looks are likely due to the various herbs, vitamins, and supplements, including noni, that I take every day. I have been a serious “health nut” for about 20+ years now. My studies, research, and use of herbal products have convinced me of the tremendous health value and benefits of herbs in my diet. I have seen my own health and well being improved, sometimes slowly, but always surely. Try Noni yourself - you will see positive changes in your body.

A physician trained at Johns Hopkins studied the affects of Noni on 25,000 Noni juice drinkers and found very positive effects for 29 health conditions in their lives. What can Noni do for you?

Try it for yourself, and see the changes in your body. Imagine feeling good again, looking younger, smoother and softer skin, improved digestion, fewer aches and pains, feeling healthier, lower blood pressure, cholesterol, and sugar levels, strengthen your body’s natural ability to fight tumors, viral, bacterial, and parasitic infections, having more energy, feeling more alert, more energetic, and more balanced. What more could you ask for!

Research studies suggest that the compounds found in Noni may work at the cellular level in the human body to help abnormally functioning cells resume normal function and help normal cells maintain regular function.

There are several theories that may explain why Noni works so very beneficially in the body. Some believe it is a selection of polysaccharides, giving Noni fruit its beneficial effects. Other theories, based on research study findings, suggest that Noni promotes the production of nitric oxide in the body, which has been shown to strengthen the body’s natural ability to fight tumors, viral, bacterial, and parasitic infections.

A more popular explanation is called the “xeronine system” developed by the forerunner in Noni research, Dr. Ralph Heinicke Ph.D. who teamed up with Dr. Neil Solomon, a medical doctor. The Heinicke-Solomon Theory explains Noni’s wide range of effectiveness in the human body.

The ancient Aryan physicians of India especially valued Noni fruit because it protected the skin from becoming dry and cracked from the sun. My investigation of the published scientific literature on Morinda citrifolia yielded more than 100 articles pertaining to this medicinal Noni plant.

After I started taking Noni, I found that I was more alert, more energetic, more balanced, my skin was glowing more than I could ever recall, my hunger for junk foods was gone, and my digestion was greatly improved. I attributed the benefits of noni to the interaction of the known components along with the unknown components, which perhaps work synergistically with all the other nutrients to give me optimum health.

Researchers have reported that significant reductions in total cholesterol and triglycerides were seen in smokers who drank a product containing juice from the fruit of the noni tree every day for a month.

Here where I live in the Philippines, and elsewhere, natives use Noni for digestive problems such as diarrhea, intestinal worms, nausea, food poisoning; respiratory problems such as congestive cough, dry cough, tuberculosis, cholera, infant chest colds and sore throat; cardiovascular problems, hypertension; inflammatory conditions such as arthritis, abscesses, mastitis, gout and other inflammatory joint conditions. It is a noted analgesic or pain reliever. One of the most common uses of noni has been in the area of skin conditions, being utilized for wounds, ulcers, abscesses, ring worm, boils, cellulitis, swellings, scalp conditions, including lice, and sores. It has been used in the treatment of tumors and broken bones, jaundice and other forms of liver disease, as well as treating asthma and dysentery, hypercholesterolemia, menstrual cramps, gastric ulcers and diabetes.

John Bizman is the owner of http://www.Noni-Morinda-Citrifolia.com, the Number One source for Noni Information. John and his family live in the Philippines. Please visit his Website and feel free to email any questions to him at elcantorio@gmail.com.

Coffee Intake Linked To Lower Diabetes Risk

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

Drinking coffee, especially when it is decaffeinated, will be associated with a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes, according to a report in the Sept 26 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, one of the JAMA/Archives journals. The link between coffee and diabetes risk appears to be very consistent across different ages and body weights; in addition, most research has found that the more coffee an individual drinks, the lower his or her risk for diabetes. However, it remains unclear whether it is the caffeine or any other ingredient in coffee, which may confer a protective effect.

Mark A. Pereira, Ph.D., and colleagues at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, had studied coffee intake and diabetes risk in the 28,812 postmenopausal women in Iowa over a 12-year period. At the beginning of the study, in 1986, the women answered questions about the risk factors for diabetes, including age, body mass index, physical activity, alcohol consumption and other smoking history. They also reported how often they consumed a variety of foods and these beverages over the previous year, including regular and decaffeinated coffee.

Based on this information reported in the initial questionnaire, about half of the women (14,224) drank one to two cups of coffee per day; 2,876 drank more than six cups; 5,553 four to five cups; 3,232 less than one cup; and 2,927 none. Over the following 12 years, 1,417 of the women reported on surveys, which they had been newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. After adjusting the data for some of the other diabetes risk factors, women who drank more than five cups of any type of coffee per day were 21 percent less likely than those who drank no coffee to be diagnosed suffering from diabetes; those who drank more than five cups of decaffeinated coffee per day had a 32 percent reduction in risk compared with those who drank none.

Overall caffeine intake did not appear to be much related to diabetes risk, further suggesting that some other ingredient in coffee was also responsible. “Magnesium, for which coffee is a good source, can explain some of the inverse relation between coffee intake and risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus through known helpful effects on the carbohydrate metabolism,” the authors write. However, the study found no relation between Magnesium and diabetes risk. Other minerals and nutrients found in the coffee bean including compounds known as polyphenols, which have also been shown to help the body process carbohydrates and antioxidants, which might protect cells in the insulin producing pancreas can contribute to its beneficial effects and needs to be examined in future studies.

The Mangosteen is a fruit that grows in tropical regions all over the world but is indigenous to southeast Asia. Known as the Queen of Fruits, it has been used in herbal medicine for many centuries by different cultures around the globe. The rind or pericarp contains xanthones that are proven to be 100 times more powerful as an antioxidant than Vitamin A, C & E.

There are over 40 different xanthones in the Mangosteen fruit. Each xanthones has a different health benefit. Xango can be used to treat inflammation, arthritis, IBS, sleep disorder, mild depression, diabetes, infection, cancer just to name a few. Xanthones have over forty research papers written about them, and plenty of medical doctors use Xango as a supplement in their practice. Please see the website to hear what the doctors are saying and do your own research at www.pubmed.com.

Xango is the only company that incorporates the entire fruit into their Mangosteen juice dietary supplement. The trick is to make it taste good while maintaining the medicinal benefits of the pericarp. While the pericarp is the part that contains most of the xanthones, it is also very bitter. The other Mangosteen drinks use only an extract or just the inner fruit.

The word Xango is a combination made up of two words. The first part Xan comes from xanthones, and the go comes from Mangosteen.

Tips For Lowering Your Health Insurance Costs

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

Is the rising cost of health insurance getting you down? Don’t feel alone. There are currently millions of uninsured Americans who simply can’t afford to pay the outrageous premiums to get medical coverage. Fortunately, most states will step up and help low-income families cover their children at least, but what happens if mom or dad gets sick? Who’s going to pay the bills than? What if the breadwinner of the family, whether it’s mom or dad, is unable to work anymore and they run up large amounts of medical bills?

The system simply isn’t working anymore, however, there are a few things we can do to keep our monthly premiums manageable, for those of us who can afford to make minimum payments to have a health insurance policy. With take a look at some of those.

There are things you can exclude from your health insurance policies that will decrease your monthly cost. This is the case on all policies so you’ll need to look around but it is possible to do.

Another thing you might consider is to raise your deductibles. The deductible is the amount of the insurance company expects you to pay before they start paying anything. An example of this would be was called 80/20. This means that you’d pay the first 20% of the of the costs of your visit to the doctor and the insurance company would cover anything up to that. So the cost of $100 for your medical needs then you would be expected to pay $20 and the insurance company would take care of the other $80. You’d only pay up to a maximum amount every year on your deductible deductibles vary anywhere from zero to $5-$10,000.

The higher deductible you carry on your policy, the lower your monthly payment will be, however, if you carry a high deductible this means that you will be paying a large portion of your everyday medical care out-of-pocket.

If you could possibly set aside enough money that would equal your annual deductible amount you would be in very good shape because the average person only see the doctor once or twice a year. This would make your payments minimal, your out-of-pocket costs would be covered if you have the money set aside and you would be covered in case of any major medical emergency. Just another option to think about.

How Does Stress Affect Health?

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

How Does Stress Affect Health?

Many are now asking the question, “How does stress affect health?” If you too are asking then you have taken the first step to dramatically improving your health. Some health experts are convinced that stress is the largest health problem in America. However, this often goes unnoticed because the damage stress does to our health often gets blamed on other diseases and conditions. One study said that 75% of all visits to primary care physicians are stress-related.

How Does Stress Affect Health? - It’s In The Immune System

So, how does stress affect health? Well, as you probably already know, your body’s immune system is what keeps you healthy from all kinds of diseases, from relatively benign ones like the common cold to more serious ones like bronchitis. People who get sick all the time probably have weak immune systems while those who rarely get sick most likely have strong and powerful immune systems. What few people know is that stress, and more importantly chronic stress, actually weakens the immune system, thereby limiting its ability to fight off even the most harmless of illnesses.

This should shed a lot of light on the question of how does stress affect health. Someone who gets a cold every other week may just think they are unlucky or just happen to always be around people who have colds. This is not so. Someone with a strong immune system could be ingesting cold viruses all day long but they never get a cold because their immune system is capable of destroying them. So, if you get a lot of colds you may in fact not be managing your stress effectively.

There are other answers to the question of how does stress affect health. For example, there is an immune system protein called interleukin-6. People under serious stress have been found to have much higher levels of this protein than people under little or no stress. Interleukin-6 in large amounts has been associated with various diseases like some cancers, infections, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, osteoporosis and heart disease. Can you believe that? Who would have thought that this answers the question of how does stress affect health.

Another part of the problem in answering the question of how does stress affect health is that people don’t truly understand exactly what stress is. If you ask most people, they may respond by saying stress is caused by worrying about something like money. This is not entirely true. Acute stress is easier to recognize because you can feel it right now. On the other hand, chronic stress is more subtle. For example, all people experience some stress after any big life change, including getting married. Getting married is a wonderful and joyful event for people so they are not aware that it is also bringing with it a certain level of stress. It’s just harder to notice. However, that stress will still inflict harm on your immune system. So you can see that asking the question of how does stress affect health is so important.

Asking, “How does stress affect health?” is an important questions for you to start asking because it may be causing you serious health problems with you even knowing. The next question you should ask is “How do I effectively relieve stress?”
